Punjab govt set to restore eight Buddhist sites

Punjab has launched a multi-million rupee restoration and preservation project, for ten ancient sites, eight out of which are Buddhist reported Dawn on Saturday.

The sites to be restored are Sirkap, Dharmarajika Stupa, Mohra Moradu Stupa, Bhir Mound site, Bahalar Stupa, Mankiala Stupa, Kalawan Stupa and Giri archeological remains. The government has taken up this project because these places have great historical and religious importance.

According to Dawn.com, Deputy Director of department of archeology and museum Mohammad Iqbal Manj said on Wednesday that the project would take three years in completion, which would include restoration, face lifting and preservation work of these sites belonging to Taxila valley civilization.

Speaking to the media Manj said that gift shops, cafeteria and public toilets would be provided at two destinations including Mughal garden and Taxila Museum. The construction of these facilities would be carried out during the current fiscal year, for which the government has allotted Rs. 7 million.
