Misbah Ul Haq expressed his worries after Pakistan’s ODI whitewash, saying the team’s performance was without any doubt disappointing, one that cannot be defended by any explanation.
He was addressing an online conference on Wednesday.
Even though the opponent’s first choice was forced into self-isolation after testing positive for Covid-19, England was able to win all three ODIs against Pakistan with ease.
When talking about the last match he admitted that it was a decent total (331-9), which should have been defended easily. For him, every department lacked somewhere, be it the bowling in the first two matches, or the pathetic fielding throughout the series. One could cover for the failure of the other, and it was indeed a brutally disappointing effort, added the coach.
“Especially after playing against South Africa earlier this year and putting up such a great front, this performance crushed all hopes of upward progress that we had from team Pakistan,” he said.
He added this series had brought the team back to square one, which needs to be analyzed thoroughly so that effective solutions may be thought of.
“If a team fails to perform, the entire coaching staff is to be blamed as well," he said. "I am still not sure what caused this failure, which is a sign of worry for me.”
The former captain also highlighted the systematic faults which often cause the team’s expected development.
“For the team of England, there is a proper setup and they are lucky to have a huge pool of players to choose from for international matches. We don’t have that kind of system for Pakistan. Most times we struggle to find the right player for the right spot, and often we end up choosing someone from domestic competitions for international cricket.”
