Mufti Taqi survives knife attack

Police have apprehended a man who attacked Mufti Taqi Usmani at Darul Uloom around Fajr time on Thursday. The attacker was restrained by Mufti Taqi's guards and handed over to the police.

According to news reports so far, the suspect used a knife as he approached the renown Islamic scholar.

According to the police, the suspect had a plastic bag with him which contained a knife and woman's clothes. He told the police that his wife left him and was refused to returning home. In a bid to win her back, he went to see Mufti Taqi for spiritual advice.

Samaa Digital reported SSP Baloch as saying that the police is questioning the attacker's family and are investigating details of the knife. They can't ascertain whether it was a premeditated attack or a misunderstanding.

This is the second attempt on Mufti Taqi, a former judge of Federal Shariat court.

In March 2019, attackers fired at Mufti Taqi's car when he was on his way to deliver a Friday sermon near University Road. His guard and driver were killed in that attack.

Following the attack, then Karachi police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh said: “The motive [for the shootings] appeared to be bigger than sectarianism or terrorism.”
