Govt withdraws petition against LHC order allowing Shehbaz Sharif to travel abroad

The federal government on Tuesday withdrew its petition against the Lahore High Court's (LHC) decision to grant PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif "one-time" permission to go abroad.

According to the details, a two-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan, presided over the hearing. The LHC's registrar presented the record of the case before the bench. He informed the court that the case was heard in one day after the reservations pertaining to Sharif leaving the country were dismissed.

During the hearing, Justice Ahsan asked if Shahbaz Sharif's case heard "as per the usual system or through a special process?" The SC bench was informed that the high court decided to hear the government's reservations and Sharif's petition the same day.

"On Friday, 9:30 am, the reservations were raised and proceedings into the case began at 11:00 am the same day," the LHC's registrar briefed the court.

Justice Ahsan remarked that the government's attorney was provided only 30 mins to seek instructions. He also inquired "in last year how many hearings were held on Fridays at 12:00 pm? And in how many cases was one-sided relief provided?"

During the hearing, the attorney general told the bench that Shehbaz Sharif has also withdrawn his plea from the LHC over which, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan remarked it means that the matter is over now.

The LHC had granted “one-time” permission to the opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif to go abroad on medical grounds, however, he was stopped to board the flight by the FIA officers.
