The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday rejected the Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) appeal against the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) decision to conduct re-polling in the entire constituency of NA-75 Daska. Voting will be conducted in the constituency on April 10.
A three-member bench of Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial had taken up an appeal filed by PTI candidate Ali Asjad Malhi.
The ruling party's candidate had challenged the ECP’s Feb 25 decision to order re-election in the entire constituency.
The apex court concluded arguments from both sides and issued a verdict rejecting Malhi's plea. Justice Bandial, while announcing a short verdict, upheld ECP's directives for re-polling in NA-75. He said the court had taken the decision in light of the law, the Constitution, and its own jurisdiction.
The judge also remarked that "guidelines" will be issued to prevent similar incidents in the future.
ECP had issued a directive for re-polling in Daska after clashes erupted between PML-N and PTI workers. In many polling stations firing incidents took place and a couple of deaths were also reported. Both PML-N and PTI blamed each other for the violence.
