Pandemic far from over, WHO Chief reiterates

Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has once again warned the world that the coronavirus pandemic is far from being over.

This Thursday, the UN health body chief addressed the recent spike in new cases at the 5th Meeting of the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee on COVID-19. He said:

This pandemic is far from over. We need to adjust all our efforts to be suitable for the long-run.

The novel coronavirus is still wreaking havoc worldwide, in fact, the rate of spread of the viral disease has skyrocketed in several regions of the world prompting the governments to impose second lockdowns. According to the figures provided by the World Health Organization, as of 31st October 2020, there have been 45,428,731 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 1,185,721 deaths globally.

Just in the past 24 hours, a record of 535,928 new coronavirus cases was confirmed globally, as reported by WHO.

In a recent tweet, Dr. Tedros asked the public not to give up in these trying times as it is not an option. He tweeted:

We understand the pandemic fatigue that people are feeling. It takes a mental and physical toll on everyone and no one wants more so-called lockdowns. But if we want to avoid them, we all have to play our part and we cannot give up. We must not give up.
