As a result of constant efforts by 'Free The Wild', an organization for the protection of wildlife founded by Cher, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in May ordered the wildlife officials to release Kaavan and find him a sanctuary in Sri Lanka within 30 days.
Cher started efforts for the release of Kaavan from the zoo in 2016 after outrage over his treatment by zoo officials went global with a petition asking for his release garnering 200,000 signatures. Cher celebrated IHC's decision, calling it "one of the greatest moments" of her life. As soon as the verdict came out on May 21st, she shared the news on Twitter.
