China blocks Brahmaputra tributary as India mulls to scrap Indus water treaty with Pakistan

WEB DESK: China has blocked a tributary of Brahmaputra river to complete its Hydro power project.

According to Chinese Xinhua news agency, Chinese government has blocked the water of tributary for multiple purpose i.e generate electricity, irrigate land and to control the flood.

However, Indian and Bangladeshi regimes have shown concern over this blockage as it will directly affects the water supply to millions of people.

Starting in the Himalayas in Tibet as the Tsangpo River, the river flows eastward for 704 miles. At the Shuomatan Point, the river bends and enters India crossing the Assam Valley.  It then flows south through Bangladesh.

The Hydro power project that started in 2014 will be completed till 2019, sources said.

News of Brahmaputra River blockage came in the time when India is threatening Pakistan to revoke the Indus water treaty. -bbcurdu
