London Olympics: Retired police officers approached for security

With just 17 days until the Games begin, officers said they had been asked to increase the guards at the Olympic Park in east London over fears of a shortfall.

G4S security company, which is having contract of over £300 million to keep the Olympics secure but concerns were reported over the training and accreditation of its recruits.

Now these concerns seems to be rising after last week's terror raid carried out by Armed British police in Stratford, on a residential address near London’s Olympic Park, arresting 6. However, Scotland Yard said the operation was not linked to the upcoming games.

Martin Johnson, a former detective constable with the Metropolitan Police, said: "They wanted me to go up to the Olympic Park this week and get a uniform. They are assuming that ex-police officers are all right, but anything could have happened in the 18 months since I retired."

According to the firm "The security operation is gradually building in the lead up to the Games and we are increasing the security workforce arrangement numbers in line with this program.

A former British Army commander in Afghanistan, Brigadier Alister Davis, has been in charge of training the guards over a period of nine months. He admitted it was a formidable task and added: "Some things are simpler in the desert."
