Freedom icon Gandhi rules India's beachside film festival

An international film festival in the seaside resort of Goa will showcase movies on India's independence and the struggle by freedom icon Mahatma Gandhi, an official said on Thursday.
"A full segment of the 38th edition of the festival is dedicated to the momentous events leading to our independence," a festival spokeswoman said.
Some of the patriotism-laced films to be shown include state-made documentaries such as "The Name Gandhi" and "India Wins Freedom" as well as Bollywood productions.
The movies are being shown in theatres in the Goan capital Panaji.
Mahatma (Great Soul) Gandhi is revered in India as "Father of the Nation" for his non-violent campaign that ended British colonial rule in the subcontinent in August 1947.
The beachside festival, which is showcasing 200 films from 20 countries, opened last Friday with an award-winning Romanian film on illegal abortions.
The curtain will fall on Monday, with Spanish director Carlos Saura's music drama "Fados".
For the first time, the annual event has also screened a Pakistani entry -- "Khuda ke Liye" (For God's Sake).
France's Oscar-nominated "Orchestra Seats" and box office hit "Taxi4" have been among the biggest draws so far at the festival, which is used as a platform to promote India's prolific film industry in the West.
