Sindh Inspector General Javed Alam Odho has formed a new five-member investigation committee to probe the death of young Karachi businessman Mir Raza Ali after his family and lawyer expressed no confidence in the existing investigation team, police officials said on Saturday.

DIG Crime and Investigation Aamir Farooqi will head the new committee, while SSP CTD Irfan Bahadur has also been included.

The committee will also comprise an SP Investigation from Korangi, an SP Central Investigation and Ghaznfar from the Special Investigation Unit, according to police officials. A formal notification regarding the committee’s formation is expected to be issued shortly.

Police sources said all officers associated with the previous investigation had been removed from the case following the receipt of the new post-mortem report.

The new team will investigate the case in light of the latest medical findings, while all digital evidence collected so far will be preserved, the sources said.

The formation of the new committee comes after Raza’s family and lawyer Jibran Nasir repeatedly demanded that the existing investigation team be replaced to ensure an impartial and transparent probe.

The family had also demanded that Karachi Additional Inspector General Azad Khan be kept away from the investigation and transferred out of Karachi.

Raza’s father, Mir Hussain, had expressed no confidence in the existing team, saying he would accept a new investigation team if it was formed by the Sindh IGP or chief minister.

He said police had continued discussing the possibility of suicide with the family, while they had maintained from the outset that Raza was murdered and demanded that those responsible be brought to justice.

Mir Hussain also complained that the family was not being kept informed about the progress of the investigation. He said the family would not come under pressure and would approach the court if the investigation team was not changed.

Nasir had also demanded a new team after the preliminary findings of Raza’s second post-mortem emerged. He said the medical evidence showed that Raza had suffered a gunshot injury and had sustained injuries before his death.

The preliminary second post-mortem report documented black marks on Raza’s body, wounds on his feet, a deep injury below the jaw and an injury to the forehead. It also recorded fractured ribs and classified the injuries as ante-mortem.

The report further stated that the bullet wound to Raza’s back caused blood to accumulate in his lungs.

Nasir had said 17 samples were sent for further forensic and chemical analysis. He claimed the medical findings supported the family’s position that Raza had not died by suicide but was murdered.

Raza’s mother had also said she had maintained before the post-mortem that her son was murdered based on what she had seen. She said the medical findings had strengthened her position.

Mir Raza Ali went missing from Karachi’s Ferozabad area before his body was found in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on July 29.

The initial medical report had attributed his death to a gunshot wound. However, his family expressed dissatisfaction with the findings after noticing what they described as marks of violence and burns on his body.
