A notorious extortionist and bandit was killed in an alleged police encounter with the Crime Control Department (CCD) in Dera Ghazi Khan, sources said on Wednesday.

The sources said that a CCD officer sustained serious injuries during the intelligence-based operation.

According to a CCD spokesperson, a team launched a raid to arrest Akbar Khosa following a tip-off.

As police attempted to apprehend him, Khosa and his accomplices allegedly opened fire on the officers.

Police returned fire, killing Khosa during the exchange, while the remaining members of his gang managed to escape.

CCD officer Shehzad Ahmed Qureshi was seriously injured in the gunfight and was shifted to hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment.

The spokesperson said special teams have been formed to track and arrest the absconding suspects.

The CCD spokesperson said operations against organised crime, extortion networks and other dangerous criminal elements will continue across Punjab without discrimination.
