The federal government on Friday increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) for the fifth consecutive day under the country’s new daily fuel pricing mechanism.

According to an official notification, the price of motor spirit (petrol) has been increased by Rs3.66 per litre, taking it to Rs335.18 per litre from Rs331.52 per litre.

The price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been raised by Rs4.80 per litre to Rs383.46 per litre from Rs378.66 per litre.

The revised prices took effect immediately.

Over the past week, petrol prices have increased by a cumulative Rs24.47 per litre, while high-speed diesel has become Rs60.16 per litre more expensive under the government’s daily pricing regime.

The latest revision follows a series of daily adjustments.

Last Friday, the government increased petrol by Rs5.44 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs31.05 per litre.

On Monday, petrol prices were reduced by Rs0.35 per litre, while diesel prices were raised by Rs5.71 per litre.

Petrol was then increased by Rs4.93 and diesel by Rs7.15 on Tuesday, followed by hikes of Rs6.39 and Rs7.83, respectively, on Wednesday.

On Thursday, petrol prices were raised by Rs4.40 per litre and diesel by Rs3.62 per litre.

The government last week replaced the previous weekly petroleum pricing system with a daily pricing mechanism, authorising the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to determine ex-depot petrol and diesel prices using a rolling seven-day average of international oil prices.

Officials say the new system is designed to enable quicker adjustments in response to fluctuations in global energy markets and improve transparency in fuel pricing.

The continued increase in petroleum prices is expected to add further inflationary pressure by raising transportation and logistics costs across the country.

High-speed diesel is widely used in the freight, agriculture and industrial sectors, while higher petrol prices directly affect private motorists, public transport users and commuters nationwide.
