Karachi court rejects police challan in Gul Plaza tragedy case, orders fresh DSP-led investigation
1 min readA local court in Karachi sent back the police challan in the Gul Plaza tragedy case on Thursday, objecting to the investigation and ordering that the case be reinvestigated by a police officer of deputy superintendent (DSP) rank.
The court, hearing petitions filed by accused Tanveer Pasta and other suspects nominated by police, said the challan should be submitted only after the investigation is completed.
The court directed investigators to clarify the role of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), district police and traffic police, and determine where negligence by each institution had occurred.
It also questioned why fire brigade vehicles were not dispatched immediately if traffic routes had been clear.
During the hearing, the public prosecutor said all relevant institutions had appeared before the commission investigating the incident, but its report had not been included in the challan.
The prosecutor said the report had not been made public, although its contents had been widely reported in the media, and added that he was not satisfied with the challan submitted by police.
