Iran condemns Trump’s threats against Oman over Strait of Hormuz
2 min readIran on Thursday strongly condemned what it described as threats by US President Donald Trump against Oman over the Strait of Hormuz, expressing full solidarity with Muscat and calling the remarks a violation of international law.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Oman had long played a constructive role in maintaining regional peace and stability, and that threatening the Gulf state was unacceptable.
“Threatening to destroy a United Nations member state, which has always played a constructive role in peace and security in the region, is not only a violation of the principle of non-use or threat of force but also a dangerous sign of normalising bullying and lawlessness in international relations,” Baghaei said in a statement on Thursday.
According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, Tehran condemned US threats after Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would remain “open to all” under US monitoring and warned that Washington would “destroy” Oman if it cooperated with Iran in controlling the strategic waterway.
The comments came amid heightened tensions in the Gulf following reports that Iran had restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after a US-Israel war that began in late February. The situation later eased following a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan in early April.
Baghaei said Iran continued to allow the passage of all ships through the strait, although restrictions remained in place on vessels linked to Washington, Israel and affiliated entities.
He also condemned US military strikes on the southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, calling them a clear violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and urged the United Nations Security Council to hold the United States accountable.
Baghaei accused Washington of repeatedly violating the ceasefire through attacks on commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf and international waters, as well as airstrikes on southern Iran.
He added that Iran would take “all necessary measures” under Article 51 of the UN Charter to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
