Russia sees window for peace in Gulf, urges restraint ahead of Pakistan talks
2 min readRussia’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday said a “window of opportunity” is emerging to resolve the complex situation in the Persian Gulf, with most countries supporting ongoing diplomatic efforts and pinning hopes on successful negotiations between the United States and Iran.
In a statement on the evolving Middle East situation, the ministry said the current moment offers a chance to ease tensions. However, it expressed regret that “certain forces,” whether intentionally or unintentionally, are creating obstacles to peace.
The statement criticised elements that initiated aggression against Iran and are now blaming Tehran for disruptions to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
It stressed that the sequence of events must not be distorted, noting that the vital waterway remained fully operational without interruption until February 28.
Moscow said the immediate priority is to address the root causes of the ongoing “destructive conflict,” calling for a complete end to the war it said was initiated by the United States and Israel.
It highlighted the broader impact of the conflict, including damage to countries in the Arabian Peninsula, continued military activity along the Lebanon–Israel border, and missile and air strikes on Lebanon, which it said must cease immediately.
Russia reiterated its support for resolving regional disputes through political and diplomatic means. It said it remains committed to close coordination with its partners to advance constructive peace efforts and pave the way for lasting stability in the Middle East.
The ministry also urged all participants in the upcoming talks in Pakistan to act responsibly and avoid any steps that could undermine the opportunity for de-escalation.
Reaffirming its longstanding position, Russia emphasised the importance of establishing a collective security framework in the Persian Gulf.
It said such a structure should be developed through dialogue among all coastal states, including Arab countries and Iran, with the participation and support of external actors capable of contributing to a fair and sustainable balance of interests.
