US strikes military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island
2 min readThe US military has carried out additional strikes on military targets on Iran’s Kharg island, a US official told Reuters on Tuesday, adding the strikes did not impact oil infrastructure.
Media reports said loud explosions were heard across Kharg Island earlier in the day, triggering concerns over the security of one of Iran’s most critical economic hubs.
Foreign media outlets also reported claims that US and Israeli aircraft were involved in the strikes, though there has been no official confirmation from either country regarding joint operations.
Some reports suggested that key installations may have been damaged, including a jetty on the island, but Iranian authorities have not issued a formal statement confirming the extent of the damage.
US Vice President JD Vance in Hungary during his visit, said that the strikes on Kharg Island do not represent a change in strategy.
“We were going to strike some military targets on Kharg Island, and I believe we have done so,“ Vance said.
“We’re not going to strike energy and infrastructure targets until the Iranians either make a proposal that we can get behind or don’t make a proposal,” he added. “I don’t think the news in Kharg Island … represents a change in strategy, or represents any change from the President of the United States.”
Located in the northern Gulf, Kharg Island is considered the backbone of Iran’s oil export system and a highly sensitive strategic zone under tight security.
Access to the island is heavily restricted, with entry permitted only through special government authorisation.
The island has gained renewed attention in recent weeks amid escalating conflict, with earlier statements from US President Donald Trump indicating that American forces had targeted Iranian military facilities there while deliberately avoiding oil infrastructure.
Trump also warned that Washington could reconsider its restraint if Iran disrupts shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
Iran has responded with strong warnings, with military officials saying any attempt to attack or seize Kharg Island would trigger retaliation against US and allied energy assets.
