Mark Lee, one of the most prominent members of K-pop group NCT, will leave the group as his contract with SM Entertainment comes to an end, the agency confirmed on Friday, April 3.

SM Entertainment said the decision was mutual after discussions about Mark’s future direction.

The 10-year contract concludes his activities with all NCT subunits, including NCT 127, NCT Dream, and NCT U.

Debuting in 2016, Mark quickly became one of NCT’s most recognisable members, contributing to rap, songwriting, production, and creative direction.

Fans have often regarded him as a central figure and the “face” of the group, bridging multiple subunits throughout the years.

In an emotional Instagram letter, Mark reflected on his decade-long journey with NCT, saying he feels a “strong desire to fully dive into” his personal dreams while acknowledging the impact his departure may have on fans.

“I fully understand that this change can feel like a huge shock and even a source of hurt… That’s why my heart feels really, truly heavy,” he wrote.

He concluded by expressing gratitude to NCT, SM Entertainment, and the fans, adding, “My beginning was SM, NCT, and Czennies… I will never forget where I started.”

Following his announcement, fellow NCT members shared supportive messages on Instagram. Jeno wrote, “Our leader hyung!! Let’s be happy,” Jaemin added, “Baby, don’t be sad, I’ll kiss you.

Love you,” Haechan simply commented, “I love you,” and Chenle encouraged him with “Hwaiting.”

Mark’s departure marks a major moment for the group and fans alike, signalling the end of a decade-long chapter and the beginning of a new personal journey for the artist.
