At least 20 people were killed and more than 60 injured in rain-related incidents after heavy downpours and strong winds battered Karachi overnight, severely disrupting daily life across the city.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, more rain is expected later today (Thursday), with forecasts of thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hail in various parts of the city.

The overnight storm inundated roads, suspended electricity supply in several areas and caused widespread damage.

Heavy rain also left key arteries submerged which in turn affected normal movement of vehicular traffic.

Rescue officials said the deadliest incident occurred in Baldia’s Mowach Goth area, where 13 people were killed and three injured when the wall of a building collapsed.

The victims had reportedly taken shelter inside the building to escape the rain.

In Quaidabad’s Majeed Colony, a couple died, and one person was injured after the wall of a house caved in.

In Korangi, separate incidents claimed two lives — a woman died in a roof collapse, while a man was killed when a tree fell.

Lightning strikes near Shah Latif Town killed one person, while a child died in Gulistan-i-Jauhar after a wall collapsed.

In Clifton, a woman was killed when a tree fell during strong winds.

Large parts of the city, including Saddar, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Bahadurabad, Tariq Road, Sharae Faisal and University Road, experienced significant water accumulation, disrupting traffic flow.

Strong winds also uprooted trees, toppled signboards and damaged the roofs of katcha houses.

According to data, Korangi received the highest precipitation at 55mm, followed by Mauripur (22mm), Gulistan-i-Jauhar (13mm) and Keamari (12mm).

Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid weak structures, trees and electricity poles, as unstable weather conditions are expected to persist later in the day.
