Senior players under fire after loss to India in crucial match
2 min readFormer cricketers and fans have expressed strong disappointment over the poor performance of senior players after the team’s 61-run defeat against India in the T20 World Cup.
Both the fans and the former greats were unanimous in their demand to make drastic changes in the team lineup.
They were particularly harsh on senior players, including Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam, and Shadab Khan, whose performances were deemed underwhelming and a reason to consider introducing fresh talent.
Former captain Mohammad Yousuf said the era of Shaheen, Babar, and Shadab is over.
Yousuf emphasised the need to replace old faces and stressed the need to give opportunities to new faces.
He added that victories against weaker teams are not enough and that strong performances against India are essential.
Former all-rounder and captain Shahid Afridi also expressed frustration, stating that if it were up to him, he would have removed Shaheen, Babar, and Shadab from the team, asserting that such senior players are no longer contributing positively to the squad.
Ex-chief selector Rameez Raja criticised the batters’ performance, saying the players had learned nothing from past experiences and that Pakistan played careless cricket against India.
Other former players have also demanded immediate changes in the squad and urged that young players be given a chance to strengthen the team and make it more competitive.
Sunday’s defeat marked the eighth consecutive loss to India in three years, highlighting the recurring underperformance of senior players.
Following Sunday’s loss, Pakistan must win its final group match against Namibia to secure a place in the Super 8 stage of the mega event.
