Pakistan engages in talks to sell JF-17 Thunder amid global interest

China’s approval crucial as advanced fighter attracts worldwide buyers

Pakistan has confirmed that major international negotiations are underway regarding the sale and purchase of JF-17 Thunder, a modern 4.5-generation fighter aircraft jointly developed with China.

Minister for Defence Production Raza Hayat Hiraj told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that the multirole fighter jet has attracted strong interest from several major countries, and discussions are ongoing with multiple potential buyers.

He said China’s consent would be an essential part of any export agreement for the aircraft.

The JF-17 Thunder Block III is equipped with an AESA radar and long-range beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles, classifying it as a 4.5-generation fighter capable of performing a wide range of combat missions.

According to the defence production minister, fighter jets of similar technological capability typically cost between $250 million and $350 million on the global market. In contrast, the JF-17 Thunder is significantly cheaper, making it more competitive internationally.

He said the aircraft is priced between $40 million and $50 million, although the cost may increase if additional advanced features are included.

The aircraft could significantly enhance the defence capabilities of purchasing countries.
