India blocks water flow of Jhelum and Neelum rivers

Experts warn move violates Indus Waters Treaty as river flows hit historic lows

India has stopped the flow of water in the Jhelum and Neelum rivers after already restricting the Chenab, sharply reducing water inflows to Pakistan, sources said.

According to sources, water inflow in the Jhelum and Neelum rivers has dropped to just 3,000 cusecs, compared to more than 5,000 cusecs four days ago.

The flow in the Chenab and Jhelum rivers has fallen to historic lows.

Four days ago, the Chenab was receiving around 10,000 cusecs of water, which has now reduced to 5,000 cusecs.

Water discharge from Head Marala into the Chenab has dropped to zero.

Water experts said canals originating from Qadirabad and Khanki barrages will no longer receive water.

They warned that India’s actions amount to a violation of the Indus Waters Treaty and advised the Indus Waters Commission to approach the international arbitration court.

Experts cautioned that India’s water aggression could render millions of acres of land in Punjab barren if the situation persists.
