Five officials suspended over 3-year-old’s death in Karachi manhole

Five officials have been suspended following the death of a three-year-old child, Ibrahim, who fell into an open manhole in Karachi near Nipa flyover, on the directives of Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.

A formal notification regarding the suspensions has been issued by the local government department on Wednesday, confirming the administrative measures against the responsible officers.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah ordered the suspension of all officials responsible following the death of the three-year-old boy.

Presiding over a meeting to review the tragic incident, the chief minister directed the Sindh chief secretary to take immediate action against the responsible officers.

The meeting was attended by provincial ministers, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) officials, town administration, and police authorities.

During the meeting, Murad Ali Shah expressed deep sorrow over the child’s death and stressed that strict action must be taken against anyone found negligent.

He said blaming each other over the tragedy was “regrettable”.

According to sources, the chief minister instructed the suspension of all relevant officials and ordered the chief secretary to initiate action against those responsible without delay.

The sources said Murad Ali Shah expressed strong displeasure over the performance of relevant authorities in the case of three-year-old Ibrahim.

He ordered the suspension of all responsible officials and instructed the Sindh chief secretary to take immediate action.

Following the chief minister’s directive, the Sindh Local Government Department suspended several officers, issuing an official notification to formalise the action.

The suspended officials include Imran Rajput, Senior Director Municipal Services at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation; Rashid Fayyaz, Assistant Engineer at Town Municipal Corporation Gulshan-e-Iqbal; Waqar Ahmed, Executive Engineer at Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation; Assistant Commissioner Gulshan-e-Iqbal Amir Ali Shah; and Mukhtiarkar Gulshan-e-Iqbal Salman Farsi.

The meeting also issued directives for a comprehensive investigation into the tragic incident to determine accountability.
