Amitabh Bachchan’s emotional farewell to Dharmendra
In an industry where relationships often fade once the cameras stop rolling, Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra shared a rare bond that lasted decades.
The death of Dharmendra, Hindi cinema’s beloved “He-Man”, at the age of 89 has left the film world and millions of fans grieving.
Among the many tributes, it is Bachchan’s emotional farewell that has touched hearts the most, offering a glimpse into a friendship built on deep respect and affection.
Dharmendra passed away on November 24 at his Juhu residence after prolonged health complications. He had been in and out of Breach Candy Hospital since November 1 but was recovering at home when his condition suddenly worsened.
His final rites were performed on Monday at the Pawan Hans Crematorium, where Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Agastya Nanda were among the first to arrive and pay their respects.
Amitabh Bachchan’s emotional tribute
Later, Bachchan shared a deeply heartfelt note grieving his Sholay and Chupke Chupke co-star:
“Another valiant Giant has left us, left the arena, leaving behind a silence with an unbearable sound, Dharam ji.”
He remembered Dharmendra not just as a star, but as a man of unmatched grace. Calling him “the epitome of greatness,” Bachchan wrote that Dharmendra’s legacy came not only from his powerful screen presence but also from “the largeness of his heart and its most endearing simplicity.”
Bachchan also reflected on the unpredictability of the film world, a space where everything constantly changes, but said Dharmendra remained untouched by it:
“Unsoiled throughout his glorious career, in a fraternity that witnessed changes every decade… the frantic fraternity underwent change, not him.”
He ended his tribute by recalling Dharmendra’s warmth, something fans and colleagues often spoke about:
“His smile, his charm and his warmth, extending to all that came in his vicinity, are a rarity in the profession.
The air around us swings vacant, a vacuum that shall ever remain, prayers.”
A legacy that lives on
Dharmendra leaves behind a stellar cinematic journey spanning over six decades, from powerful action roles to unforgettable comedies.
His final film, Ikkis, featuring Agastya Nanda and Jaideep Ahlawat, is set to release this Christmas, offering fans one last chance to see the beloved actor on screen.
Some on-screen pairings become timeless, and Jai–Veeru from Sholay is one of them.
As Amitabh Bachchan bids farewell to his friend and co-star, that brotherhood continues to live in memories, in cinema history, and in the hearts of fans across generations.
