All bunkers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram district would be dismantled on Sunday (today) in a bid to restore peace in the area under the peace agreement, Deputy Commissioner Ashfaq Khan said.

In accordance with the Kohat pact, the demolition of bunkers in the villages of Khar Kaly and Balash Khel is scheduled to take place today at 12pm.

The collection of weapons across the district would continue until February 1, the DC said.

Last month, the KP apex committee decided to dismantle all bunkers in the violence-hit district following weeks of deadly tribal clashes that have severely affected law and order in the area.

The conflicts, which have resulted in the deaths of at least 130 individuals since last month, have left many wounded and displaced. The violence escalated after an attack on a convoy that claimed the lives of at least 43 people.

Residents in Kurram District, which shares a border with Afghanistan, faced shortages of food and medicine due to road closures. Reports said that at least 147 children died because of lack of basic items and medicines.

Meanwhile, 12 additional vehicles carrying relief supplies and food items arrived in Parachinar on Saturday. According to the assistant commissioner, such vehicles travelled from Hangu to different areas in Kurram.

Manan Khan said that seven vehicles delivered supplies to Teri Mengal, four to Boshra, and one to Gaghri. “Strict security measures” were implemented along the Tal-Parachinar highway during the transfer of relief supplies.

The Parachinar-Tal main highway is closed to all traffic, causing significant hardships for residents. Sources said the blockade was due to a protest in Mandori, which has resulted in the closure of essential routes.

A convoy of 40 vehicles is waiting to travel from Tal to Parachinar, the business community said and added that at least 500 trucks are needed to alleviate the difficulties faced by the people of Upper Kurram.

Parachinar DHQ Medical Superintendent Dr Syed Mir Hassan Jan has stated: “The pharmacies are out of stock of medications, prompting the public to visit the DHQ hospital. The hospital receives between 2,300 to 2,500 patients daily for check-ups, although emergency medications are available.”

Moreover, medical unions have expressed concerns that essential medicines “are not available in the local market, noting that there was not a single medicine vehicle in Friday’s convoy.”

In Lower Kurram, the protesters have demanded a relief package for the victims of the Begun incident and compensation for their losses. They have vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met.
