Two bus accidents in central Afghanistan resulted in the deaths of 52 individuals and left 65 others injured.

The incidents occurred on a highway connecting Kabul to Kandahar in Ghazni province late Wednesday, as confirmed by Taliban government officials.

According to Hamidullah Nisar, the provincial head of information and culture, one bus collided with a fuel tanker near Shahbaz village, while another bus crashed into a truck in the Andar district.

Chief government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid expressed deep sorrow over the fatalities and injuries, emphasizing the tragedy of the situation.

Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene to aid the injured, with many reported to be in critical condition.

Traffic accidents are unfortunately common in Afghanistan, attributed to poorly maintained roads, reckless driving, and a lack of regulatory oversight.

This incident echoes previous tragedies, such as a March collision in Helmand province that claimed over 20 lives and another serious accident in December 2022 that killed 31 people when a fuel tanker overturned in the Salang Pass.

The recurring nature of such accidents highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the region.
