In a recent meeting led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the federal cabinet has unanimously approved significant amendments to the Code of criminal procedure, set to be presented in Parliament for final approval.

The new amendments aim to streamline the process of filing First Information Reports (FIRs), enabling police officers to utilize modern technology and forensic techniques during investigations.

Additionally, the provisions allow for the recording of witnesses’ audio and video statements.

The role of prosecutors during investigations will be enhanced, granting them the authority to point out deficiencies in police reports.

Furthermore, women, children under 12, and men over 70 will have the option to record their statements at a location of their choosing, a facility also extended to individuals with physical and mental disabilities.

The amendments mandate that trial courts deliver verdicts within one year, with accountability measures in place for any delays through the relevant high court.

In cases where police investigations confirm innocence, the accused will be eligible for bail based on discharge reports.

Additionally, the federal cabinet has approved the National Registration and Biometrics Policy Framework.
