Daniel Altmaier and Jan-Lennard Struff reach finals of Davis Cup

This victory allowed Germany to avenge their 2022 quarter-final loss to Canada

Daniel Altmaier and Jan-Lennard Struff led Germany to the semi-finals of the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga with a 2-0 victory over Canada. On November 20, the German duo triumphed over Gabriel Diallo and Denis Shapovalov, setting up a match against the Netherlands, who defeated Spain 2-1 the day before.

Altmaier secured the crucial first point for Germany by defeating Diallo 7-6 (5), 6-4 in just under two hours. The first set was tightly contested, with Altmaier racing to a 5-0 lead before closing it out. In the second set, he faced a 15-40 deficit in the 10th game but managed to break back, sealing the win.

“I haven’t played Davis Cup all year, so I’m proud to contribute to the team’s first victory. The mental aspect is key, and my fighting spirit helped me find my rhythm,” Altmaier said during his on-court interview.

In the second match, Struff overcame Shapovalov, clinching Germany’s place in the top two with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 7-6. Despite losing the first set, Struff demonstrated remarkable composure to mount a comeback.

This victory allowed Germany to avenge their 2022 quarter-final loss to Canada, who went on to win their first Davis Cup title against Australia.

“It’s a significant achievement for us to move from the quarter-finals to the semi-finals. We’re determined to win and reach the finals now,” Struff stated.

In other news, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who won both the US Open and Australian Open, will compete in Italy’s semi-final against Argentina, while the United States will face Australia in the other quarterfinal match.
