The Indian government has formally put Wikipedia on notice regarding concerns over bias and inaccuracies on the platform.

In a recent communication, officials highlighted that a small group of editors seems to have significant control over content, which could impact the platform’s neutrality.

Sources indicate that the government has questioned why Wikipedia should be considered an intermediary rather than a publisher, raising concerns about its editorial responsibilities.

Neither the government nor Wikipedia has yet released an official statement on the matter.

This scrutiny follows a critical remark from the Delhi High Court about Wikipedia’s status as a “free encyclopedia.”

The court previously warned of a potential ban in India stemming from a case filed by Asian News International (ANI), which alleged that Wikipedia contained inaccuracies and defamatory statements.

The recent criticisms align with broader concerns regarding Wikipedia’s alleged bias, particularly in light of the ongoing U.S. presidential elections.

Prominent figures, including Elon Musk, have accused the platform of favoring far-left ideologies and have called for a halt to public donations, claiming it is influenced by “far-left activists.”
