Lahore has once again topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities due to a severe smog crisis, prompting the Environmental Protection Department to issue a red alert.

The city is bracing for a new wave of smog, with air quality remaining dangerously unhealthy.

Currently, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stands at an alarming 517, making it the most polluted city globally. New Delhi and Kolkata follow in second and third place, respectively. Specific areas within Lahore are reporting even higher AQI levels, with Johar Town reaching 320, Mall Road at 475, and Askari 10 hitting 511.

Despite efforts like a green lockdown, pollution levels have not improved. In response, the Punjab government has announced school closures until November 9 to protect children from harmful air quality.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecasted temperatures ranging from a minimum of 19 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels climbing to 81%. Unfortunately, there is no prospect of rain shortly.

Medical experts are advising residents to wear masks and limit outdoor activities. The Environmental Protection Department has warned that the situation may worsen, as winds from India are expected to move towards Pakistan in the next 24 hours, further deteriorating the AQI.
