Justice Yahya Afridi takes oath as Chief Justice of Pakistan today

President Zardari officiates the oath-taking for the newly appointed judge

Justice Yahya Afridi is scheduled to take the oath of office as Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) in a formal ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr today.

President Asif Ali Zardari will officiate the oath-taking for the newly appointed judge, who will serve a fixed three-year term as the 30th Chief Justice.

Justice Afridi succeeds former CJP Qazi Faez Isa, who retired on October 25.

This appointment is notable as Afridi is the first to be appointed under Articles 175A(3), 177, and 179 of the Constitution following the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

Oath ceremony begins

Justice Yahya Afridi was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Pakistan during a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad, with President Asif Zardari administering the oath of office.

The event was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and all judges of the Supreme Court.

Justice Afridi will hold the position for the next three years, following the recently enacted 26th constitutional amendment.

The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, was also present at the ceremony.

The proceedings began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, after which the notification of Justice Afridi’s appointment was announced. Under the 26th constitutional amendment, the parliamentary committee nominated Justice Afridi as the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan.

President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath to Yahya Afridi on Saturday, making him Pakistan’s 30th Chief Justice and successor to former top judge, Justice Qazi Faez Isa.

The oath-taking ceremony of the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan is attended by the Prime Minister, service chiefs, and members of Parliament.
