The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has released its draft proposal for constitutional amendments, including the establishment of a Constitutional Court under Article 175-A.

This follows a parliamentary committee meeting chaired by Khurshid Shah, where the government and PPP presented their drafts, with the JUI-F expected to submit theirs the following day. The meeting, attended by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and Barrister Gohar, failed to reach a consensus, leaving a deadlock.

The PPP’s draft proposes the formation of a Constitutional Commission of Pakistan (CCP) to oversee the appointment of Supreme Court and High Court judges.

The CCP would comprise the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, two senior judges, a representative from the Supreme Court (either a retired judge or a nominee of the Chief Justice), the Attorney General of Pakistan, a representative from the Pakistan Bar Council, and two members each from the National Assembly and the Senate.

The draft also clarifies the procedure for removing judges under Article 209.

The draft prepared by the PPP has also called for the establishment of provincial constitutional courts.

The release of the PPP’s draft follows earlier statements by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari indicating that neither the JUI-F nor other opposition parties had yet submitted their proposals.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman confirmed that the JUI-F’s suggestions were discussed, while Barrister Gohar criticized the lack of transparency regarding the government’s draft, citing conflicting reports about the authenticity of a leaked version.
