Americans can renew passports online as beta program expands nationwide
Americans will be able to renew their passports online as the US Department of State expands the beta program that has been running for the past two months starting Wednesday.
Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma announced this at a travel conference in New York, stating, “Tomorrow, online passport renewal will be available nationwide for the first time.”
To address the increasing demand for consular services, including passport renewals and travel visas, the State Department has hired more staff, brought in experts, and improved its website.
Approximately 200,000 individuals participated in the beta phase, and officials estimate that nearly 50% of renewals may be processed online shortly.
However, certain criteria must be met to use the online renewal system, such as being located in the U.S.
Additionally, passports that have been expired for over five years cannot be renewed online.
Verma also noted that processing times may not necessarily be quicker.
