Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly exploring the possibility of leaving Barcelona this summer, BBC Sports reported. The 33-year-old midfielder joined the Catalan club on a free transfer from Manchester City and has only completed one full season there.

Although he is contracted for another two years, Barcelona has indicated that they will not block Gundogan if he finds a suitable opportunity elsewhere. Interest in the player has emerged from clubs in England, Spain, and Saudi Arabia.

Spanish publication Sport said the German international has reportedly informed the club he wants to move on from the LaLiga heavyweights after being left out of the side for their 2-1 win over Valencia. Pep Guardiola is reportedly “open” to reuniting with his former stalwart, The Sun reported, as he looks for reinforcements after injury to Oscar Bobb.

Last season, Gundogan made 51 appearances across all competitions, helping Barcelona secure a second-place finish in La Liga. Barcelona coach Hansi Flick commented on the situation after Gundogan missed the team’s season opener against Valencia due to a concussion on Saturday.

Flick, who previously managed Gundogan on the Germany national team, expressed his appreciation for the midfielder, stating: “I know him very well. I value both the player and the person he is.”

The Barcelona coach mentioned that he and Gundogan had discussions about his future, but the details will remain private. He conveyed optimism, saying, “I have a feeling he will stay.”

Despite Flick’s desire to retain Gundogan, the decision could be impacted by Barcelona’s complex financial situation. Reports suggest the club has struggled to register new £51 million signing Dani Olmo due to La Liga’s squad cost control regulations.
