The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) would hold an open-ended extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee at the level of Foreign Ministers on Wednesday to discuss the continued crimes of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, including the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and its aggressions against the sovereignty of Iran.

“In response to the ongoing atrocities committed by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people, particularly in the Gaza Strip, this meeting has been convened,” a press statement of the OIC Secretariat said on Monday.

The meeting would be held at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah.

To date, it said Israeli actions had resulted in the deaths of over 40,000 individuals and injuries to more than 91,000 Palestinian citizens, most of whom are women and children.

Civilian properties, including 430,000 homes, had been destroyed, along with infrastructure, health and educational facilities, places of worship, and historical sites. Nearly two million Palestinians were displaced from their homes, the press statement said.

Last week, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that Pakistan “fully supports” Iran’s call for an extraordinary meeting of the OIC following the killing of Hamas political chief. He said this in a telephonic conversation with acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani.

Haniyeh was visiting the Iranian capital for the inauguration ceremony of the Iranian president when he was killed, along with his bodyguard, in what Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said was a strike on their accommodation early on Wednesday morning.

Dar, who is also the deputy prime minister, confirmed that Pakistan would “actively participate” in the “important meeting”.
