Cutaneous anthrax, transmitted from animals, found in 5 people in China

All 5 individuals are isolated

Five farm workers in eastern Shandong province have been diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax, a rare disease primarily found in animals.

The infection occurred after the workers came into direct contact with infected cattle at a beef farm in Yanggu county.

All five individuals are reportedly experiencing mild symptoms and are currently receiving treatment in isolation. Health authorities are closely monitoring individuals who may have been in contact with the infected workers.

Cutaneous anthrax is contracted through contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products like wool, hides, or hair.

The spores enter the body through cuts or scrapes on the skin, often appearing on the head, neck, forearms, and hands.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies anthrax into four types, with cutaneous anthrax being the most common form in humans.
