Mohsin Naqvi to become next president of the Asian Cricket Council
Mohsin Naqvi, the current Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Interior Minister, has been appointed as the next President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
The decision was made during the ACC’s meeting held in Bali, Indonesia, in January 2024. Naqvi’s appointment was unanimously approved by the member nations, and he is set to assume the role in January 2025, succeeding the current ACC President, Jay Shah.
“This is a proud moment for Pakistan and a testament to the country’s growing influence in the cricketing world,” said a senior official from the PCB.
“Mohsin Naqvi’s appointment as the ACC President will not only bolster Pakistan’s position within the Asian cricket community but also provide him with an opportunity to shape the future of the sport in the region.”
Naqvi’s tenure as the ACC President will be for a period of two years, during which he will lead the council’s initiatives and activities across the Asian continent. The current ACC President, Jay Shah, has been granted a one-year extension to his term, ensuring a smooth transition of power.
This appointment comes at a crucial time for Pakistani cricket, as the national team recently faced a disappointing early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup. The team is now preparing for the upcoming Asia Cup 2024, where reports suggest that the Indian cricket team may not travel to Pakistan to participate.
Mohsin Naqvi’s dual roles as the PCB Chairman and the Interior Minister have drawn some criticism from former cricketer Shahid Afridi, who argued that Naqvi might not have sufficient expertise in the cricketing domain.
