Several areas in GB inundated due to glacier melting

Residents are facing threat of evacuation

A surge in glacial melt due to intense heat has led to widespread flooding in several areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly along the River Ghizer.

Aaj News reported, the rising water levels have severely damaged standing crops in numerous locations. A major protective embankment constructed along the River Ghizer has also collapsed.

Locals and elected representatives have urged the district administration to take immediate action to protect residential areas and farmlands. The excessive water flow has also exacerbated soil erosion in several areas.

In some locations, the water levels have risen so high that residents are facing the threat of being forced out of their homes.

The accelerating rate of glacial melt poses a significant threat to low-lying areas, and concerns have been raised about the lack of adequate preparedness measures.
