Pakistan witnessed a massive sacrifice of livestock during the recent Eid al-Adha festival, with over 680,000 animals slaughtered across the country, according to the Pakistan Tanners Association.

The total value of these animals is estimated to exceed Rs500 billion.

The association reported that the sacrifices included 290,000 cows, 330,000 goats, 385,000 sheep, 165,000 water buffalo and 98,000 camels

The hides alone are valued at approximately Rs85 billion, representing a crucial source of raw material for the leather industry.

However, the association expressed concerns about potential losses due to the extreme heat and improper handling of hides, exacerbated by climate change. They estimate that up to 40% of the hides could be damaged, significantly impacting the leather industry.
