Ramadan has entered its last decade, meaning Eid-ul-fitr is just around the corner. Along with the jubilation of completing another month of fasting and enjoyment of one of the year’s most special days, eid also carries a financial obligation.

The fitrana or sadaqah-e-fitr is obligatory on every Muslim and must be paid before Eid.

The Shariah Board Pakistan has fixed the payment at a minimum Rs300 this year, which is roughly equivalent to two kilograms of wheat flour.

However, Sharia Board Chairman Dr. Mufti Muhammad Zafar Iqbal Jalali said that affluent people should pay fitrana in accordance with their capacity instead of sticking to the minimum.

Islam also allows people who cannot fast due to unavoidable reasons to pay fidya or compensation.

According to the Sharia Board, the fidya for one missing fast has also been set at a minimum of Rs300 this year.

The amount has been set at Rs600 for oats, Rs 2,400 for dates, and Rs 4,400 for raisins.

If a person wishes to pay fidya for the entire month, the amount comes to Rs 9,000 for wheat flour, Rs 18,000 for oats, Rs 72,000 for dates, and Rs 132,000 for raisins.

However, the Sharia Board has clarified that fidya only applies to people with serious health issues who cannot observe the roza without serious danger to their well-being.

If a person skips a fast due to travelling or other reasons, they are obligated to to fast on an alternative day as compensation.
