Did General Asif Ghafoor salute PM Shehbaz Sharif at Pakistan Day parade?

Even if he did, why there is a fuss about his purported action

Amid Pakistan Day’s events and investiture ceremony on Saturday, a video from the parade purportedly showing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former ISPR DG Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor has gone viral on social media.

The short video clip was uploaded on social media after the event at the traditional parade ground in Islamabad.

It shows PM Shehbaz individually meeting every military officer who before shaking hands salutes him—a tradition and protocol of the ceremony. Lt Gen Ghafoor, the Quetta Corps Commander, was also apparently amongst them, according to several social media users.

Many social media users claimed that the former ISPR DG saluted the incumbent prime minister. Even if he did, such a practice is part of the protocol entitled to the chief executive of the country.

The oddity, according to many users, in such a clip was Ghafoor’s one of the tweets he made after the victory of PTI founder Imran Khan in 2018. He used a Quran verse.

He was criticised for his post, however, it was re-shared after former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s return to the country.

Several social media users have reacted differently to the video apparently showing Lt Gen Ghafoor.

A user named Raja Aslam wrote, “what kind of day Asif Ghafoor had to see that he had to salute the same person who was rejected once.”

Another user named Saadia Khalid re-shared the video, saying that it reminded her of Ghafoor’s 2018 post.

PTI leader Khurram Shehzad wrote on social media, “It was a difficult decision, but Lt Gen Asif Ghafoor has to salute PM Shehbaz.”

Noman Khan, another user, claimed that the military officer in the video was not Asif Ghafoor but General Shahid Imtiaz who is the Corps 10 Commander and the sign on Corps on his shoulder was obvious.

Journalist Mohsin Bilal also rejected the presence of Ghafoor in the video, saying that General Imtiaz made a salute to the PM, not the former ISPR DG.
