Senator Bahramand Tangi has moved a resolution seeking a ban on mainstream social media platforms including Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, X (formerly known as Twitter), and YouTube.

The resolution has been placed on the Senate agenda for its meeting scheduled for March 4.

The senator called for a ban on the platform citing the country’s interest to “save the young generation from their negative and devastating effects”.

He went on to add that social media platforms were being used for the promotion of norms against religion and culture.

Senator Tangi also alleged that the social media platforms were creating hatred amongst the people on the grounds of language and religion.

He also expressed concerns regarding the use of social media platforms against the interests of the country “through negative and malicious propaganda against the armed forces of Pakistan.”

PPP leaders had said that the membership of Senator Tangi was terminated for violating the party discipline and not responding to a show-cause notice.

Addressing a press conference on February 2, PPP district president Naeem Khan Umarzai said that the senator violated the party narrative during the recent session of the Senate.

His membership was terminated after he failed to respond to a resolution by independent Senator Dilawar Khan calling for the postponement of general elections.

Meanwhile, access to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has remained restricted in Pakistan for the last two weeks.

The outage began on February 17 and the users continue to face issues in accessing the platform.
