Karachi receives intermittent shower as authorities impose rain emergency

Parts of Karachi received light to heavy drizzle throughout Friday as the provincial authorities imposed a rain emergency.

The rainfall began in some areas of the metropolitan at around 11:00am as Baldia Ittehad Town, Surjani Town, S.I.T.E Area, North Karachi, Orangi Town, and New Karachi received downpours.

Kharadar, Gulistan-e-Johar, Safoora Goth, Tariq Road, PIB Colony, Jamshed Road, and Federal B Area also experience intermittent rain.

While the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had predicted rain at around 2:00pm, several parts of the city received rain in the morning hours.

The second spell of rain began at around 1:45pm in the city where Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, I. I Chundrigar Road, Liaqatabad, Suhrab Goth received showers.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has predicted a spell of heavy rainfall around 5:00pm.

According to data from the Met Office, Surjani Town received the highest amount of rainfall i.e., 7 millimeters, followed by Keamari (5mm), Orangi Town (4.8mm), Quaidabad (4mm), PAF Faisal Base (2.5mm) Korangi (2mm), Saadi Town (2mm), DHA (2mm), Jinnah Terminal (1mm) and Old Airport (1mm).

The Sindh government has ordered that all institutions in the province be closed at 2:00pm on Friday because of the rains. Educational institutions will not have evening shifts either.

A special rain emergency cell has been created in the chief minister’s office to monitor the situation.

Mayor Karachi has canceled all leaves granted to the municipal corporation’s staff and told all staff members to remain alert.

The government has also told fishermen to remain out of the sea till March 4.
