Debutant spinner Tom Hartley took seven wickets as England pulled off a dramatic 28-run upset win over India on day four of the opening Test on Sunday.

Chasing 231 for victory, India were bowled out for 202 in the final over of an extended third session of play in Hyderabad, as Hartley got Mohammed Siraj stumped with his left-arm spin to trigger celebrations from the England camp.

The 24-year-old Hartley, a left-arm spinner, got bowler Mohammad Siraj stumped for his seventh strike on day four in Hyderabad to rattle India’s chase of 231.

Hartley took two wickets in India’s first innings total of 436 after a bruising introduction to Test cricket on day one when he leaked 63 runs in nine overs.

He was named in the team XI for the opener of the five-match series as part of a four-man spin attack including part-timer Joe Root.

Having conceded a first-innings lead of 190, England made a remarkable comeback with match-winning performances from Ollie Pope and Tom Hartley.

A brilliant 196 from Pope, the fourth-highest score in a team’s second innings of a Test by an away batter in India, helped England set India a target of 231.
