ECP issues fines, removes hoardings over violation of campaign rules

Adds that code of conduct is being strictly enforces

As the campaign trail heats up with elections only weeks away, the Election Commission of Pakistan has sprung into action over violation of campaign rules.

In a statement issued on Sunday, ECP said that its monitoring teams were effectively doing their jobs across Pakistan and flagging any violations they found.

The ECP said that fines of Rs20,000 and Rs30,000 had been imposed on two candidates by the returning officer in Shangla.

It also said that notices had been issued to candidates in Punjab’s NA-75, NA-153, NA-66 and PP-133. Offences included wall chalking and putting up posters in illegal sizes.

In addition, posters and panaflexes that had been put up illegally in Jhelum, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Bhakkar, Nankana, Kasur and Lahore.

The statement also said provincial election commissioners have been given strict instructions to enforce the election code of conduct.

The ECP had issued an 80-point code of conduct that specifies all aspects of election for candidates from campaign to putting up posters.

General elections are set to be held across the country to the National and Provincial Assemblies on February 8.
