A third resolution seeking delay in already general elections, which are scheduled to take place on February 8, was tabled in the Senate on Sunday, on account of the weather and the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The resolution, moved by an independent senator from KP, Hilalur Rehman, stated that the increasingly cold weather and snow were not providing a conducive environment for citizens to cast their votes and were also creating challenges for candidates trying to campaign.

It was third such resolution tabled in the upper house of Parliament. The incumbent Senate would complete its tenure in March.

Last week, the Senate adopted a non-binding resolution calling for the postponement of polls over security and bad weather concerns. Political experts and journalists were shocked to see the resolution which was passed in a session where the attendance of senators was low.

It was introduced by independent Senator Dilawar Khan and received support from Balochistan Awami Party senators.

“In the same way, due to security concerns in the country, especially in KP, candidates are facing threats of terrorist attacks while campaigning,” said the resolution tabled on Sunday, “voters and candidates in KP were feeling a sense of deprivation.”

It added that the date announced for elections was proving to be “unsuitable” for the province and added that polls should be postponed to a “suitable date” instead of February 8.
