A convicted felon in a Las Vegas courtroom of the US state of Nevada attacked a female judge when she refused him probation.

The district attorney expressed confidence that the culprit would face the consequences

The man leapt over the bench and attacked Judge Mary Kay Holthus in Clarl County when she was sentencing him on Wednesday after a three-time felon, and denied him probation.

It was around 11 AM when Deobra Redden, 30, was convicted, and his attorney asked Holthus to sentence his client to probation, but Holthus did not allow leniency for the repeat offender and replied “I just can’t with history.”

Suddenly, the peaceful court saw chaos when Redden jumped to the bench and tackled the judge to the ground.

Amid chaos, Redden was seen wrestling court officers who appeared to drag him. He once broke from the officers and tried to return to the judge.

Judge Holthus suffered a minor head injury after the incident. A marshal was also injured in the exchange of punches.

District Attorney of County Steve Wolfson expressed gratitude towards the people who assisted the court in wrapping up the fight and came to aid.

Wolfson admitted in a statement that without help from the public, it would have been much worse as the defendant demonstrated extremely violent behaviour. “I’m confident there will be consequences” for him, he said.

As per the record obtained from the court, Redden seems a man with aggressive behaviour as he threatened a man to bust the kneecaps on April 23, resulting in substantial bodily harm.

Ahead of the said incidents, a different judge in May ordered Redden to undergo with competency test. He was committed to a state behaviour facility before he was found competent in October, records show.

Redden admitted charges against him in November. In December Judge Holthus issued warrants for his arrest in December after he missed the court proceedings.

Following Wednesday’s attack, he has entered in new case of battery and battery on a protected person with the latter charges indicating that the victim was “substantially harmed”.

Previously, Redden appeared before Holthus on the charges of malicious destruction of property. He also spent a year in prison after being found guilty of battery charges in 2021.
