Video showing Qureshi being manhandled during rearrest goes viral
Pakistan’s former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi was arrested immediately after his release from Adiala prison on Wednesday. Video of his arrest has gone viral on social media.
Police officers detained and overpowered him before he could step out of jail as a free man. His manhandling has led to a social media outcry.
The video shows Shah Mahmood Qureshi waving, what looks like, a legal document before dozens of police officers who prepared to arrest him again
“Today, they said to me…” Qureshi said as a police officer approached him and he was interrupted mid-sentence. “No, you cannot arrest me,” he repeatedly told the officer, who ignored Qureshi’s words and pushed him around.
Policemen then made him walk towards a police armoured van (APC) and drove him to an undisclosed location.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Imran Khan won bail in the notorious cipher case last week.
While Khan has been arrested in NAB cases and there were little chances of his release, Qureshi faced no other cases and was set to be released. However, Rawalpindi deputy commissioner ordered his re-arrest under Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law over the weekend.
On Wednesday, when Qureshi was finally about to be released, he was arrested by the police.
Sources told Aaj News that Qureshi has been arrested in the GHQ attack case this time.
Two other clips show Qureshi was delivering a speech before police moved to arrest him. He also spoke as he was being bundled into the police armoured vehicle.
Qureshi said he was innocent and the court had ordered his release.
