Can new microblogging platform Bluesky compete with X?
Microblogging social platform Bluesky has announced that users will not need to have to be logged in to see posts on the platform, according to a blog post from Bluesky CEO Jay Graber.
The platform, an invite-only decentralised, is considered an alternative to X. You must receive an invite code from another user to join or can sign up for Bluesky’s waitlist for a code.
Bluesky is a text-based microblogging platform similar to how Twitter used to function in its early days. Users can share text-based posts of up to 300 characters that are shown in feeds with other users’ posts.
With the latest update, anyone can easily see posts from both the web and from the Bluesky app. However, users can also prevent people who are not logged in from seeing their posts by clicking a toggle in settings.
Bluesky notes that “other apps may not honor this request” and that the toggle does not make your account private.
Bluesky also adopted a new logo; a butterfly, replacing its previous logo of blue sky with clouds.
“Early on, we noticed that people were organically using the butterfly emoji 🦋 to indicate their Bluesky handles. We loved it, and adopted it as it spread,” Graber says in the blog post. “The butterfly speaks to our mission of transforming social media into something new.”
Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey conceptualised by and developed Bluesky in parallel with Twitter. He introduced the Bluesky project back in 2019 while he was still Twitter CEO.
The platform crossed two million users last month after opening the app to users around February.
“Exactly one year ago, on November 16, 2022, the first post on Bluesky was created. Fast forward a year later, and we’ve just crossed two million users after opening the app to users around February. We’re excited to continue growing a truly open social network,” the team said on November 16.
