Army Chief General Asim Munir described the Jaranwala incident as ‘tragic’ and ‘intolerable’ on Thursday.

A statement by the Inter Services Public Relations said that the Army chief made the remarks while addressing interns who completed the ISPR’s program.

“Jaranwala incident is extremely tragic and totally intolerable. There is no space for such incidents of intolerance and extreme behavior by any segment of the society against anyone, particularly against minorities,” General Munir was quoted as having said.

ISPR also added that General Munir said that the citizens of Pakistan are equal irrespective of religion, gender, cast or creed.

“He emphasized that no one will be allowed to take law in own hands and those culpable of committing such crimes will be brought before the court of justice,” the statment said.

Multiple churches were vandalised and homes belonging to the christian community attacked by mobs in Jaranwala over the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran.

Congratulating the internees for successfully completing the program, General Munir described youth as the future of Pakistan.

“COAS also highlighted the efforts of inimical forces towards creating and fomenting fissures, intolerance, mistrust and violent behaviour among the people to spread anarchy and unrest in the country,” the statement added.

“It’s imperative for the youth to discern the difference between truth, half truth, lies, misinformation and disinformation,” General Munir said.
